The construction of Kärdla Airport in the village of Hiiessaare, Hiiumaa municipality, Hiiu County, was completed in 2018.
The aim of the project was to renovate the pavement of the runway, taxiways, and platforms of Kärdla Airport, to widen the taxiways, and to upgrade the navigation lights system of the airport. The aim of the modification of the navigation light systems was to upgrade the lights to CAT I system. The solutions were devised according to the expert assessment of the Kärdla Airport navigation lights system that had already been prepared. The customer wanted to introduce a new landing system at Kärdla airport, which would allow aircraft to land in low-cloud conditions. Owing to the aim of the project, the safety and sustainability of air transport at Kärdla Airport improved.
