metres of new cycle track

On Veski Street, between Näituse and Kuperjanovi streets, the carriageway was narrowed to create significantly wider pavements for pedestrians on both sides of the street. In one direction, cyclists share the carriageway with motor vehicles. In the opposite direction, a new 1.6-metre-wide cycle track was constructed using red-pigmented asphalt.

To calm through traffic and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, all three intersections within the reconstruction area were designed as raised intersections. Parking is now prohibited on Veski Street, while ten new parking spaces were added on J. Kuperjanovi Street.

At the Veski–Näituse intersection, an indirect left-turn solution for cyclists was introduced — a new approach in Tartu, although widely used in other European cities. It allows cyclists to make a left turn in two stages while remaining to the right of vehicles travelling in the same direction.

The streetscape was complemented with new landscaping, a small pocket park and a rest area. The project also included the construction of new water supply, wastewater and stormwater networks, as well as the reconstruction of street lighting.
