The Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) in the Sadamaraudtee corridor helps Tartu manage increasingly frequent cloudbursts. Between Tähe and Turu streets, excess stormwater is collected in widened ditches and a retention pond, where it is temporarily stored before being released into the stormwater system at a controlled rate.
The solution is more than just technical drainage infrastructure. The ditches and retention pond form part of the Sadamaraudtee green corridor, where nature-based landscaping, stones and deadwood help slow down and retain stormwater, support biodiversity and create a more diverse urban environment alongside the pedestrian and cycle path.
