The reconstruction of the Tondi railway crossing replaced the former level crossing with a grade-separated solution, where trains run on viaducts while motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians pass underneath. The project also included the reconstruction of sections of Tondi and Kotka streets, the tramway, and connections to the train and tram stops.
This extensive and technically complex project brought together rail, tram, road, pedestrian and cycle infrastructure, underground utility networks and new landscaping into one integrated solution. The twin railway viaducts were constructed next to the railway and then moved into their final position, minimising disruption to train services during construction.
The reconstruction of the Tondi junction was completed in autumn 2024.
